What to eat

  • Goulash – somewhere between a soup and a stew normally made with beef and veg
  • Goulash served in a loaf of bread
  • Paprika chicken
  • Langos – fried dough can be served with a variety of toppings such as cheese and meat
  • Chimney cake
  • Dobos torte
  • Kolbasz- Hungarian sausage
  • Tokaji – Hungarian white wine

Where to eat

I’d recommend booking restaurants in advance as most restaurants we tried to go to had a queue and a lot of them were small so didn’t seat many people. It might just have been the time of year as we went around New Years and I’ve been to Budapest in the summer and it wasn’t so busy.

Cafe drum

This small restaurant offers a wide range of Hungarian dishes. They have a few set menu offers and other cheap dishes. My favourites was the paprika chicken with dumplings. The soups and goulash is also worth trying.

New York Cafe

Known by some as ‘the most beautiful cafe in the world’ The architecture in here is amazing, it’s well worth visiting for this. Expect queues as it’s a very popular place, you can also try and book a table in advance. The food and drink is a lot more expensive than other cafes but it’s worth visiting for a drink.

What I liked/disliked

I love the architecture in Budapest, especially areas around the river. Visiting fisherman’s Bastion was my favourite as it’s such a good viewpoint. Most things in Budapest are walkable so it’s easy to get around.

I really didn’t like the customer service, in restaurants most waiters weren’t friendly. When we went to the Baths no one was able to answer any questions we had. It was such hard work just to get a towel and then return it.  However I’ve been to Budapest before and the customer service wasn’t an issue then.
