5 European Road Trips You Should Add to Your Bucket List

1. Amalfi Coast, Italy

Sweeping sea views and pristine beaches are the order of the day when taking a driving holiday on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, a place that’s synonymous with romance. Named a UNESCO World Heritage site for its “physical beauty and natural diversity”, you won’t be disappointed by the culture, views or the food along the way. 2. B500 Route, Germany

Also known as the Black Forest High Road, the regions along this route are said to be the inspiration for the Brothers’ Grimm fairytales. The myths and legends that shrouded these areas deterred visitors, but in reality the rolling landscapes, lush hills and picturesque villages are exactly the magical sights you’d want to see on a driving holiday.

3. Route des Grandes Alpes, France

This route is legendary in driving circles. It stretches 425 miles, climbing up some of the highest and most breath-taking mountain passes in Europe.

It’s only open between June and October because of severe weather conditions in winter, but it’s a must-see if you want to travel from mountain to sea and across the Alps. Leave at least two days for this drive so you can fully soak in the magnificence of the scenery, nature and history.

4. Trollstigen, Norway

Trollstigen (road 63) is part of the Norwegian Scenic Route – selected roads intended to bring people closer to nature through a showcase of art, design and architecture. En route are unexpected pit stops, art installations and impressive viewpoints that make it perfect for those looking for adventure holidays.

Trollstigen itself is a dramatic drive, with 11 hairpin bends that climb 850 metres above sea level and across the Stigfossen waterfall. It’s a one-in-a-lifetime experience that deserves a place on your bucket list

5. Transfăgărășan, Romania

The Transfăgărășan Highway, also known as DN7C, is a 56-mile road that connects Transylvania with Muntenia. However, it certainly isn’t your average road. It’s often featured in lists of the world’s best road trips and according to BBC’s Top Gear, it has all the ingredients for a great driving road: “a string of great corners, draped over a mountain. Scintillating views as you ascend or descend. And a nice, remote location.”
