How to achieve Moroccan vibes in your garden

A Moroccan garden is known for it’s calming and relaxing environment. The combination of patterns, colour, nature and water create stunning outdoor spaces. If you’ve visited Marrakesh or any other Moroccan cities then you will be familiar with the spectacular and very instagrammable riads which are interior gardens or courtyards, these are common in  especially in some of the hotels. Here are some steps below to achieve this in your own garden:

Create a comfortable area

You want the area to look comfortable and inviting, the kind of place you could spend ages relaxing. To do this you will need some chairs, tables and loungers, you can choose luxury garden furniture from Skyline Design. Choosing low level furniture compliments the relaxing and laid back design approach.

Opt for bright colours

Moroccan gardens use vibrant tiles which bring colour to an outdoor space all year round, rather than solely relying on colourful flowers which are seasonal. These coloured tiles are also known as zellige and these tiles are frequently made in Moroccan cities such as Fez and Meknes.

Get back to nature

The riad gardens are very green areas making you think of nature and peace. Use plants in your own garden to create a green oasis, opting for tall green plants potted in a vibrant and rustic planter. Add some lovely smells with fragrant plants such as roses, mint bushes or rosemary which will diffuse a wonderful aroma around your space. Cactus and succulents are also very common in Moroccan gardens.

Spice up your accessories

Accessories can help transform an area, opt for vibrant outdoor rugs, colourful cushions, serene lanterns and wall lamps to lift your garden with fabulous lighting.

If you are a tea lover you could purchase a fancy Moroccan silver tea pot to enjoy some mint tea in. Even if your garden isn’t very big or you are transforming a balcony then these accessories will help you do that. Introduce some handmade arts and crafts, if you are visiting Morocco you’ll be able to pick up some ceramics, pottery, tiles and lanterns to take home with you.

Add some water features

The calming noise of a water feature will add some serenity to your garden. Alternatively if you have the space or budget then opting for a pool with green or blue tiling will transform your outdoor space.

Light the area with fire

Purchasing a fire pit can help transform and light up the area in the evening so you can have friends round for food and relax. Adding lanterns around the garden will also make it look cosy at night.

Plan your view

Riad gardens are made to be viewed from all angles so it’s important to think of the layout and how it will be seen in different areas. Most of these areas will have a central feature like a pool, water feature, unique tilled wall or beautiful large plants. Many riads are central courtyards that can be viewed from balconies or many different areas making it a focal point of the area.

Have any of your trips inspired you to redecorate your outdoor or indoor spaces? Bali is another place that has inspired me as they have a lot of greenery and use lots of natural materials to create a tranquil space.
