I Met Someone Abroad – What Next?

The perfect summer story includes a romance with someone you meet at an exotic location abroad. It’s love away from the shackles of everyday routine and even away from home. Yet, most summer romances don’t last. You meet, you have a nice time together, and then it’s time to say goodbye.

But what if you want to stay in touch and explore your relationship together?  We live in a modern world where travel and technology can join forces to maintain your relationship. Granted, travelling during the pandemic is not exactly easy. But it isn’t impossible. So, why not take it to the next level together and see what happens?

Keep things stress-free

First of all, wanting to see each other after your vacation abroad doesn’t feel pressured for any side. If your partner chooses to visit you in the UK, it is no promise that they are planning their long-term future with you. Nor does it mean they are not, or that you should. Keep things light and easy, as long-distance relationships can rapidly become stressful when partners have unrealistic expectations. Instead, make sure your partner can enjoy their stay in the UK. There are many exciting spots to visit on a day out. It’s a great place to start! After all, they’ve shown you their country, so it’s only fair to take them on a tour of the most beautiful places in the UK.

We’re going to stay together

You’ve come to a decision as a couple. You don’t want to be apart. It is a tough decision to take, as it means that one of you will choose to live away from their family. If your partner chooses to join you in the UK, you can help them sort out their right to live and work here. They could apply for a VISa at first, and after a few years apply for indefinite leave to remain. Similarly, if you are the one choosing to live abroad, you will need to follow the same steps away from home. It can be a stressful and expensive process, so it’s something to consider carefully.

Working abroad and applications

Coming to the UK with foreign qualifications is never easy. Your partner may need to seek recognition for their academic qualifications. For instance, European professionals can apply for temporary recognition of their professional accreditations in the UK. Additionally, the UK NARIC can also assist through the recognition and comparison process of international skills. If you move abroad, you may also need to go through the same process. Unfortunately, not every country recognise international skills.

Additionally, your partner may not be familiar with CV writing best practices in the UK. CV standards vary across the world. Some countries share detailed personal information, including birthdate, marital status, nationality, and even a photo. In comparison, British CVs contain fewer personal details. It can be helpful to work together to create the right CV format, whether your partner is helping you settle in their country or you are helping them in the UK.

Have you met someone special abroad? If you wish to bring the relationship to the next level, you need to be prepared for some hurdles along the way. From having high expectations to misjudging the administrative challenges, keep a clear mind to avoid unpleasant traps.
