An RV, such as a caravan or a motorhome, can be a fantastic way to go on vacation. You aren’t shackled to a cottage for a set amount of time, nor do you have to pay through your nose to visit a beautiful destination. The freedom that a caravan affords you can’t be equalled by a traditional holiday, which is why so many people have fallen in love with them.
However, if you’ve ever been on a holiday or extended road trip in a caravan, you’ll have noticed that you can spend a lot of time in your somewhat compact lodgings. While you do sacrifice some creature comforts for freedom, there are some things that you can do to make sure that the time you spend inside the caravan is as pleasant as possible.
First of all, it’s best to make sure that the caravan is the right one for you. If you’ve already got one, then it probably already works for you. But, if you’re considering splashing out, you do need to do your research. A budget is absolutely necessary, as is an idea of how you want to use your caravan. Some campers like to stay at specific sites, while others prefer a more adventurous lifestyle. Also, figure out how many people are likely to be piling into the caravan and for how long; a couple going away for a weekend aren’t going to have the same needs as a family going on an extended trip.
Once you have your caravan, you’re pretty much ready to go. However, there are still some things that you can do to make your trip more comfortable. There are always a few simple luxuries that you take with you to smooth out some of the less pleasant aspects of your journey, such as dry shampoo and baby wipes to freshen you up at times.
If you want to more permanently spruce things up, then you should definitely consider revamping your caravan. Many people own caravans that are almost as old as they are, and that age is really starting to take a toll on them. Even if yours is a bit younger than that, wear and tear can put a damper on your trip.
Before any journey, you should check the caravan for any damage that might literally put a damper on your trip by letting water in. A caravan is supposed to keep the rain away from you, and patching holes is a far better solution than an array of buckets that you could easily trip over in the middle of the night.
A less extreme issue could be the foam in the soft furnishings of your caravan. Caravan cushions do need to be replaced from time to time, and you’d be surprised at how much better you’ll sleep at night once they’re finally soft again.
Finally, don’t be afraid to give the cupboards or walls a splash of paint to brighten them up a little. Sometimes even the smallest touch can make your motor home more, well, homely.
