Tips for Travelling with Expensive Watches and Fine Jewellery

Most people choose to leave their finery and expensive goods at home when they travel. But, this isn’t always possible, or what we want to do. If you travel a lot, you might not want to be without your best watch and your most admirable jewellery for long periods of the year. You might have a special event abroad that you want your nicer pieces for, or you might just want to enjoy your favourites all of the time. The good news is, while accidents and mistakes can always happen, with the right precautions, you can minimise the risks, and take your expensive watch and fine jewellery away with you.

Update Your Insurance

If you are planning to travel with expensive goods, the first thing that you should do is check and update your insurance policy. Expensive individual items might be covered outside of the home as part of your home insurance policy. But, does this include out of the country? Check your policy, and see if you can add individual items of worth to your travel insurance policy.

Pack Jewellery Securely

Travelling is stressful. If you are travelling wearing jewellery and watches, you’ll have to take them off to go through security. You’ll then need to pick them up quickly and try to put them back on among a crowd of bustling tourists. It can be hard work, and it’s easy for something to get lost or broken.

Instead, pack your jewellery and watch while you travel. But, don’t just throw them into your luggage loose. Instead, pack them in a secure travel jewellery box, or their original boxes. Within a larger jewellery box you might want to wrap smaller items, such as earrings for extra protection.

Confirm Your Hotel Has a Safe

In the ideal world, you might want to wear your finery all of the time. Watches are perfect for special occasions, nights out with friends, and ideal for complementing any outfit and making a statement when you are on holiday. If you own an expensive watch, for instance there’s the Speedmaster by Omega which can cost anywhere from £1k all the way up to £23k, it’s vital that you keep it safe whilst you’re travelling.

If you are planning a day of water sports or other intense activities, it might be best to leave your watch and other expensive pieces in the room. In which case, you’ll want to know that there’s somewhere safe and secure to leave them. Before you travel, get in touch with your hotel to make sure there is a safe in your room, or safety deposit boxes on-site that you can use.

Document and Photograph Each Piece You Pack

If the worst happens, and something gets lost, you need to know what it is – both to help you search and to make an insurance claim. As you pack, write down each item that gets added to your case, and take a quick photo on your phone. Hopefully, you won’t need it, but it’s best to be safe.

The very best thing that you can do if you decide to travel with expensive jewellery and watches is to be protective. Look after it, be alert, and know where it is at all times.
