Why Road Trips Made A Comeback In 2020

Why did road trips suddenly come back to the fore? Well, when you cannot fly anywhere due to the pandemic, you are stuck with some sort of staycation. (when we aren’t in lockdown) And the best kinds are those that allow you to explore multiple different locations. After all, it is your country and you have probably seen a lot of it already; so no point in staying in one place right? We thought so too and that’s why we also thought that we would explain what makes a great road trip. Everything from the route, vehicle, locations and types of things to do.

The van

Since the groovy 60s, the epic road trip that everyone has in their mind, involves a VW California van. This van is very roomy, easy to drive, and the latest models have lots of driver aids, climate control, cruise control, adaptive headlights and parking sensors. Overall, it’s the best kind of two-person road trip vehicle. It’s large enough that you can sleep in it and make breakfast in the morning too. It’s got an overhang which you can sit under and have dinner too. The classic bug van has just gotten much better.

The plan

Obviously, without a route you can’t go exploring. So we thought about what kind of plan should you have to make a road trip epic? Well, it must have five things.

  • Countryside views

  • A nice bed and breakfast

  • Historical sites

  • Hiking or biking route

  • Seaside stopover

These things will give your direction because you want to travel to the seaside to have a swim, but also, enjoy the countryside. You get to drive to the coast and further in-land too. The historical sites also connect you to your country’s history and the hiking route allows you to explore forests and mountains. Of course, you need to stay in a nice little cosy bed and breakfast to get a break from the sleep quarters of your van.

Cheaper and better?

Staycations are much more affordable now, because businesses that normally carried overseas visitors are now trying to make up for lost revenue due to the lockdown. This is why it’s much more affordable to go on a road trip now and we think you should not waste the opportunity. But is it better than a sun-kissed beach holiday? Well, in many ways, yes! You know where you are, you speak the language, you understand how to use the currency and you can’t really get lost.

Becoming the explorer

Another thing about road trips is, you get to explore in your own time. This is why hiking routes are so popular because you get to go to the tops of mountains, hills and waterfalls. Buy some good hiking boots, a windbreaker jacket, along with some binoculars and explore your own country.

Road trips made a comeback in 2020 because we couldn’t go on holiday elsewhere. But they have allowed us to realise how many beautiful places exist in our own countries.
